Anaesthetics Flashcards
What are the benefits and side effects for propofol?
Anti emetic properties- reduces PONV risk
Pain on injection and hypotension
What are the benefits and side effects for ketamine?
Does not cause hypotension so used in trauma patients
Causes disorientation and hallucinations
What are the benefits and side effects for thiopental sodium?
Rapid induction of anaesthesia
Causes laryngospasm
What are the benefits and side effects for etomidate?
Causes less hypotension
Can cause primary adrenal suppression and myoclonus
What is the purpose and side effects of nitrous oxide?
Used for maintenance of anaesthesia and analgesia
Can cause increase in pressure-avoid in pneumothorax
What is the purpose and side effects of volatile inhalation anaesthesia?
Isoflurane
Can induce and maintain
Can cause myocardial depression and malignant hyperthermia
What muscle relaxants are commonly used?
Depolarising- suxamethonium=most common
Non-depolarising- atracurium
What are SE of suxamethonium?
Increase intra ocular pressure- avoid in eye injuries or glaucoma
Hyperkalaemia
Malignant hyperthermia
What are SE of non depolarising?
Hypotension
What analgesia should be used?
Often opiates e.g. fentanyl or morphine
Co-prescribe laxative and anti emetic
What is the triad of GA?
Hypnosis
Muscle relaxant
Analgesia
What is the maximum dose of lidocaine that can be given?
200mg
3mg/kg
What is the maximum dose of buvicaine that can be given?
150mg
2mg/kg
