Inflate cuff correctly, don’t turn vaporiser on until circuit is attatched, pressure test and eliminate leaks, all waste gases are scavenged
Ways to minimise pain in patient
Comfort, dry warm bedding and housing, minimal noise and disturbances, caring attitude towards patient
Signs of pain
Vocalisation, no eating, lameness, increased grooming, decreased activity
Categorisation of pain
Acute and chronic
Respiratory arrest signs
Slow irregular respiration
No chest movement, grey mucous membrane
Cardiac arrest signs
No pulse or heart rate detected Grey or blue membranes Breathing stops Dilated pupils Loss of jaw tone
Laryngospasm
Occur during intubation and extubation
Signs of laryngospams
Distress or struggling
Noisy, snoring respiration
Exaggerated lift to chest wall
What to do to prevent laryngospasm
Laryngoscope, selection of et tubes, keep patient calm
Monitor with extubation and be prepared with oxygen
Hypothermia treatment
Keep surgery as short as possible
Used warm fluids
Use bear hugger
Use heat pad
What do you need for patient history
Appetite/ fasted, last toilet, any vomiting, previous illness, current illnesses any medications
Patient data needed
Age, sex, weight, breed
