Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is produced?
A
In vertebrate muscle cells lactic acid is produced. The pyruvate itself becomes the hydrogen acceptor.
In higher plants and yeast, alcohol is the product. This is also known as alcoholic fermentation.
2
Q
What does build up of lactic acid in muscle cause?
A
Cramp.
3
Q
Under certain circumstances, what can be used as respiratory substrates?
A
Fats and proteins.
4
Q
When is fat used as a respiratory substrate?
A
When carbohydrate levels are low.
5
Q
When is protein used as a respiratory substrate?
A
When an individual is suffering from starvation.
