Anaerobic respiration Flashcards
1
Q
Understanding for Anaerobic respiration
A
Anaerobic respiration gives a small yield of ATP from glucose
2
Q
What happens in anaerobic respiration if there is no oxygen is available/
A
- Only glucose occurs
3
Q
Is Anaerobic respiration efficient/ why?
- what can only be used?
A
- Not very efficient
- Only produces 2-ATP per glucose molecule
- Only glucose can be used
4
Q
What is pryuvate converted into with plants/ what is it common in?
A
- Ethanol acid and carbon dioxide
- common in bacteria/ fungi
5
Q
What is pryuvate converted into with animals/ is it commonly used - why?
A
- Lactic acid (lactate)
- Few animals use anaerobic respiration/ metabolism as their only method of getting energy
- Animals with low energy requirements (tapeworm) gets away with it
- Animals with certain tissue can switch to anaerobic respiration (muscle cells during exercise)
6
Q
Where does anaerobic respiration occur?
A
- Cytoplasm
7
Q
How many ATP is produced per glucose molecule?
A
2 ATP per glucose molecule
