Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
Name the two types of anaerobic respiration
A
Ethanol fermentation and lactate fermentation
2
Q
Describe ethanol fermentation
A
Pyruvate (produced in glycolysis) is decarboxylated and to produce ethanal. Ethanal is then reduced by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase to form ethanol.
3
Q
What’s the first stage in anaerobic respiration
A
Glycolysis
4
Q
Describe lactate fermentation
A
Pyruvate (produced in glycolysis) is REDUCED to form lactate.
The lactate can then either by oxidised back into pyruvate for use in aerobic respiration (requires oxygen) or can be stored in the liver as glycogen.
5
Q
Where does ethanol fermentation take place?
A
Yeast and plants
6
Q
Where does lactate fermentation take place?
A
Animals
