Anaerobic Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Why do we need anaerobic cellular respiration?
In the absence of enough O2, the ETC does not work, therefore needing another way to create ATP
What mechanism is used to make ATP in anaerobic cellular respiration?
anaerobic cr uses substrate-level phosphorylation in glycolysis - NADH is oxidized so it can be used in glycolysis again since the etc is not functioning and glycolysis needs NAD+ continually.
Describe ethanol fermentation/alcohol fermentation (reactants, intermediate molecules that oxidize NADH and products)
Step 1: Pyruvate (3Cs) is converted into acetaldehyde (2Cs)
Step 2: NADH is oxidized while turning acetaldehyde into ethanol
Final Products: CO2, ethanol, 2ATP (from glycolysis)
Describe lactic acid fermentation (reactants, intermediate molecules that oxidize NADH and products)
NADH is oxidized by converting Pyruvate straight to lactic acid
Final Products: lactic acid, 2 ATP (from glycolysis)
Where does fermentation occur in the cell?
cytoplasm
