Anaerobic and Aerobic respiration Flashcards
Is oxygen needed in AEROBIC respiration?
Yes
Is oxygen needed in ANAEROBIC respiration?
No
What is AEROBIC respiration a series of?
Reactions that are controlled by enzymes
What does a cell get from Aerobic from respiration?
Energy to do work/grow
AEROBIC respiration- releasing energy from food (glucose) using oxygen EQUATION
Glucose + Oxygen —> Carbon Dioxide + Water + ENERGY (38 ATP)
The energy is released in the form of _______ molecules
ATP
What two waste products must the body get rid of?
Water and carbon dioxide
ANAEROBIC respiration happens when there is not enough ?
Oxygen
ANAEROBIC respiration is ___ _______ than aerobic as less _____ is produced per molecule of glucose,
Less efficient
ATP
ANAEROBIC respiration releasing energy from food without using oxygen EQUATION
Glucose —> Lactic Acid
Adavntages and Disadvantages of ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
Advantage:
-Muscles can release energy for a short period when oxygen is not available e.g 100m sprint.
Disadvantage:
- Lactic Acid is released which is harmful to the body. (Can cause cramp)
- Not suitable for long amounts of exercise e.g long distance running
What is oxygen debt?
Breathing deeply after finishing exercise, to get oxygen to the muscle, breaking down lactic acid to water and carbon dioxide.
BALANCED Symbol equation for AEROBIC respiration
602 + C6H12O6 —> Energy + 6CO2 + 6H20
Equation for ANAEROBIC
Glucose —> Energy + Lactic Acid (2 ATP)
