  • dysphagia
  • respiratory distress

Brain Abscess

A

predisposing factors:

  • chronic OM, sinusitis, dental infection
  • pneumonia
  • abd or pelvic infection
  • endocarditis (Staph aureus, strep)

etiology:

  • primarily caused by oral flora
    • 85% have anaerobes

S/O:

  • sxs may be subacute
  • fever
  • HA
  • altered sensorium
  • focal neuro defects
  • increased intracranial pressure, papilledema (occassionally not always)

P/TX:

  • wound debridement
  • ABX
  • passive immunization: tetanus immune globulin
  • active immunization: tetanus toxoid

  • V, xerostomia, dilated pupils (anticholinergic effects)
  • CN paralysis
  • descending flaccid motor paralysis
