A
= infection of submandibular space
etiology:
S:
- mouth pain
- drooling
- dysphagia
- respiratory distress
- “hot-potato” voice

etiology:
- anaerobes
- Peptostrep sp
- Peptococcus sp
- aerobes

Brain Abscess
A
predisposing factors:
- chronic OM, sinusitis, dental infection
- pneumonia
- abd or pelvic infection
- endocarditis (Staph aureus, strep)
etiology:
- primarily caused by oral flora
- 85% have anaerobes
S/O:
- sxs may be subacute
- fever
- HA
- altered sensorium
- focal neuro defects
- increased intracranial pressure, papilledema (occassionally not always)

Tetanus
A
P/TX:
- wound debridement
- ABX
- passive immunization: tetanus immune globulin
- active immunization: tetanus toxoid

Botulism
A
S/O:
- incubation period 12-36 hrs
- V, xerostomia, dilated pupils (anticholinergic effects)
- CN paralysis
- descending flaccid motor paralysis
