Anaemia Flashcards
Iron deficiency anaemia blood film
Microcytic hypochromic anaemia
Pencil cells
Target cells
Poikilocytosis
Oval
Tear drops
Platelets and leukocytes in IDA
Normal
Platelets or increased
Differential diagnosis for IDA
Thalassaemia
HbE
Anaemia of chronic disease
Lead poisoning
Further tests for IDA
Iron studies
Ferritin should decrease
Transferrin saturation will be very low
Transferrin will be high
Anaemia of chronic disease type of anaemia
Normocytic normochromic anaemia with a tendency to be microcytic hypochromic
ACD blood film
Rouleax
ACD platelets and WBC
Platelets are normal
Leucocytosis
ACD differential diagnosis
Lead poisoning
IDA
Thalassaemia
Further tests for ACD
CRP/ESR
Iron studies
Ferritin is not good in inflammation but transferrin saturation
Megaloblastic anaemia blood film
Increased MCV
Oval cells/Elliptocytes
Platelets and WBC Megaloblastic anaemia
Both decreased
Could be a pancytopenia
Differential diagnosis for Megaloblastic anaemia
Non Megaloblastic anaemia
Further tests for Megaloblastic anaemia
Check B12/folate deficiency
RBC count to check for pancytopenia
Acanthocytes are associated with
Liver disease
Hyposplenism
Abetalipoproteinemia
Further tests for acanthocytes
Liver tests
Check spleen
History of the patient
Lipoprotein studies
Blood group studies for McLeod phenotype
Check cholesterol- should be up
