an overview of cells Flashcards
cell
the structural and functional unit of life
the first to discover a dead cell and name it cell
Robert Hooke in 1665
robert brown
first to discover the nucleus of the cell
the first to observe living cells under his self-discovered microscope
Anton von Leeuwenhock
All plants are composed of different cells that form the tissues of cells
Matthias Scheilden
Theodore Schwann
- All animal cells had a plasma membrane
- All plant cells had a cell wall
- The bodies of all animals and plants are made of cells and the product of cells
Rudolf Virchow
gave the cell theory in 1855
the cell theory
- all cells divide and they arise from preexisting cells
- all living organisms are made of cells and are the products of cells
objections to cell theory
a. viruses do not obey omnis cellula-e-cellula.
b. prokaryotes do not have a nucleus but instead they have a nucleoid structure
c. some living cells do not posses a nucleus
smallest cell
mycoplasma (bacteria) 0.3 micrometre
largest cell
ostrich egg
longest cell
nerve cell
prokaryotic cells
pplo (pleuro pneumonia-like organisms)
shapes of bacteria
bacillus coccus vibrio spirillum
basic characteristics pf prokaryotic cells
- they have a cell wall surrounding the cell membrane except in mycoplasma.
- the fluid matrix is filled with cytoplasm.
- a nuclear membrane does not bind the genetic material.
- In addition to the genomic DNA they also have small circular DNA called plasmids, that confer other phenotypic characteristics like resistance to antibodies.
- mesosome is the differentiated form of cell membrane with folds present.
- the only common organ between P and E is ribosome.
