Values
Goal-directed activity with small treatment and task groups aimed at meeting socio-emotional needs and accomplishing tasks. This activity is directed to individual members of a group and to the group as a whole within a system of service delivery and a larger community and societal environment.
Group work
This implies the ability of members to identify themselves as members, to engage in interaction, and to exchange thoughts and feelings among themselves through verbal, nonverbal, and written communication processes.
Small group
These are those that come together through some outside influence or intervention.
Formed groups
These come together spontaneously based on naturally occurring events, interpersonal attraction, or the mutually perceived needs of members.
Natural groups
This is the general aims of a group.
Purpose
This is used to signify a group whose major purpose is to meet members’ socio-emotional needs.
Treatment group
This is used to signify any group in which the overriding purpose is to accomplish a goal that is neither intrinsically nor immediately linked to the needs of the members of the group.
Task group
This principle states those who provide help derive therapeutic benefit themselves.
Helper-therapy principle
An advantage of group treatment which states that vicarious identification with and understanding of members’ situations by peers and the worker
Empathy from multiple sources
An advantage of group treatment which is defined as “multiple points of view shared by group members.”
Feedback
An advantage of group treatment defined as “providing help and mutual support to other group members, therapeutic for the member who shares experiences and knowledge.”
Helper-therapy
An advantage of group treatment defined as “instillation of hope by other group members who have coped effectively with similar situations.”
Hope
An advantage of group treatment defined as “members both giving and receiving help.”
Mutual aid
An advantage of group treatment defined as “removal of stigma from problems seen as socially unacceptable by the larger society.”
Normalization
