An Introduction to Cells Flashcards
What are some examples of Eukaryote cells?
animals, plants, fungi, protists
What type of organelles do Eukaryotes have that are specifically for them?
membrane-bound organelles
How do Eukaryotes produce energy?
mitochondria- which is only found in Eukaryote cells
Are Eukaryotes often unicellular or multicellular?
multicellular
Prokaryotes rhyme with…
no
What are some examples of Prokaryotes?
bacteria (all species)
What are some similarities between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes?
DNA, RNA, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, vacuoles, and vesicles
What do both eukaryote and prokaryote cells do?
they do things necessary for survival
What do cell membranes do and where are they?
3rd layer, in animal & plant cells; barriers & gatekeepers, lets some molecules in
What do cell walls do and where are they?
2nd layer, in plant & bacteria cells, surrounds plasma membrane; provides the cell protection & strength & structural support
What does a nucleus do and where are they?
in eukaryotic cells (meaning plants, animals, and fungi); controls and regulates the activities of the cell (e.g. growth and metabolism) + carries information like genes
What do chloroplasts do and where are they?
in plant cells; takes energy from the sunlight to convert into sugar aka energy via photosynthesis
What do mitochondrion do and where are they?
power the cell’s biochemical reactions; powerhouse; animal & plant cells
What does animal cells have that plant cells don’t?
mitochondria
What do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
chloroplasts & cell walls
