why is CLASS a key theme in an inspector calls?
Class has its roots in the opportunities you are given at birth - children from rich homes are given more opportunities than those from poorer backgrounds. Often, those who were from rich backgrounds were more successful.
HOWEVER, Priestley believed that this was wrong and didn’t reflect anyone’s actual ability. In his play, he encourages us to look beyond class and see a society where everyone can be treated with respect - socialist ideas.

The entire play is a message of taking responsibility. Priestley believed that it was key for the more fortunate to use their money and time to look after those less fortunate. He believed it was the moral thing to do.

Priestly wrote his play to change the way society was, an attempt to return to a society that looked out for one another. The main issue is that change takes time - often over many generations until it is fully accepted. Many people in the older generation were not willing to change due to their previous prejudices being taught for so long.

- Mr birling represents capitalism. He focusses on profit and status over looking after one another, like many in society
- The inspector represents socialism. He wants society to work together to benefit all.
why is GENDER a key theme in an inspector calls?
Gender standards in society were key when Priestley wrote his play. The women were expected to stay home and care for the family, whereas the man would work and become successful. However, during WW1, both make and female roles were important, and they were all responsible. Priestley wanted society to revert to these standards, where both men and women were equally important and responsible, which is why we see all the characters must take responsibility for what they did in an inspector calls.
