In the beginning of act one, how does Gerald act?
At ease, relaxed, confident
What is Gerald’s response to being asked about port? What does this imply?
‘I don’t pretend to know much about it.’ It implies that he is confident with his social position as he does not worry about knowing about sophisticated drinks.
When challenged by Sheila at the end of act one, how does Gerald react and how does this differ to his original impression?
‘(Trying to smile) “Well what Sheila?”’ Defensive, as if he is hiding something from Sheila. This is different to his first impression as he is not as confident.
At what point does Gerald begin to worry?
When Shiela questions him on his whereabouts the summer before. - ‘except for all last summer, when you wouldn’t come near me’
Who is Gerald?
He is an aristocrat - the son of Lord and Lady Croft. We realise that they are not over-impressed by Gerald’s engagement to Sheila because they declined the invitation to the dinner.
How does Gerald react to the inspector’s acquisitions?
He is not as willing as Sheila to admit his part in the girl’s death to the Inspector and initially pretends that he never knew her. He wants to protect his own interests. - Sheila: ‘How did you know this girl?’
Gerald: ‘I didn’t’
How does Gerald ultimately act?
In act 3, he tries to prove that the inspector is a fake in order to protect his relationship with Sheila. He never fully accepts part of the blame for the suicide.
- ‘Everything’s alright now Sheila, what about this ring?’
- ‘Yes, I met a police sergeant I know down the road. I asked him about the inspector…he swore there wasn’t an Inspector Goole or anybody like him on the force here.’
