- a cold-hearted and snobbish women
- her cold, uncaring nature leads to her downfall as the Inspector forces her to unknowingly disapproval her own son.

sheila
- giddy, naive and childish
- she shows an assertive(confident) side, also intelligent and insightful
- she does what her parents tell her to do, then begins to stand up for herself, and can see things that others cannot; where the investigation is going
- by the end of the play she matures and realises that her actions have grave consequences
eric
- lacks confidence and is a drunk
- often talked down to by his father
- he can be assertive (confident) when he tries to stand up to his father
- by the end of the play he owns up to all of his mistakes and actions to do with eva smith, he becomes mature
gerald croft
- confident and charming
- initially evasive(avoid talking) and tries not to talk much
- he is honest about his affair
- he lets himself down in the final act by trying to get the family out of trouble, he doesn’t seem to have learned from his mistakes.
inspector goole
- emotionless and purposeful
- seems to know what the birlings are going to say before they even do
- he prophesises a terrible future
eva smith / daisy renton
- we never meet her in the play but we can tell that she is strong willed
- eva was also desperate for help
- organised a strike for higher wages
- ## sense of humour as she smiles when sheila tries on a dress that doesn’t suit her

- this shows his level of maturity being a part of the younger generation compared to the older generation, and how he is disappointed in his parents for not owning up like him and sheila did

- this proves that eric only slept with eva because of her good looks, suggesting he was just using her

- this is sheila being also disappointed in her parents’ behaviour as well as eric after they own up but the older generation do not

- Sheila owns up to her mistakes and now becoming mature and serious about the situation, she shows extreme remorse
