Q

The Jolly Flatboat

A

Who was the painter?- George Caleb Bingham
When was it made?- 1846
What was to? The Jolly flatboat was a boat where men worked for 6 out of the 7 days of the week. They would go on the flatboat, sail down south and sell their goods. After they would sell their goods, they would break up the boat and sell the parts to either then walk home or buy a ticket on the steamboat to go back home.
Why was the significant? This was significant because it was out of the typical traditional painting. (Landscape/biblical/historical scene/portrait/showing the upper-class society) Many people believe that this was a painting of low character as it offers individuals that are laboring and in the middle of their trip when they have a little time, they put on music and dance and have fun. It was so different from the British so many people saw it as a bad painting.
Where- the picture depicted going through the Ohio river trying to go downstream to the south and sell all the goods in the boat.

Q

Scientific Rationalism vs. Romanticism

A

Who- this theme revolved around the folk and the scholars
When- 19th century
What- In scientific rationalism, scholars questioned the folk and their beliefs as unsophisticated. They say their belief of folk as lesser, folklore was an ignorant superstition. Romanticism was presented as a more positive counter to rationalism. They saw folklore as amusing and used for entertainment, “they are not horrible but they’re certainly not good” they saw it more as entertainment rather than appreciation.
Folklore was on the rise as it reminded people (a lower class called the folk) where they came from and how they have progressed through the years.
Where-?
Why- This mattered to the understanding of American culture as many people saw this form of entertainment as something that was not important since all Americans had known was to work. It is also important as it showed the classism that was happening and how there was still a divide between the different classes. This classism was shown by people seeing these stories as dumb because they came from the poor.
