BLS protocol for cardiac arrest?

A
  1. Treat life threats ( See Procedure 701 Life Threats )
  2. Confirm DNR / POLST Status
  3. PIT Crew CPR ( See reference 806 Core Principles: Managing Cardiac Arrest )
  4. Establish Airway (See Procedure 704: Advanced Airway Management )
  5. CPR per current County guidelines. Minimize delays and interruptions
  6. Apply AED and use as indicated
  7. Mechanical CPR Device if applicable
  8. Prepare for transport / transfer of care

BLS protocol for traumatic cardiac arrest?

A
  1. If patient shows signs of obvious death, do not resuscitate ( See policy 613 Determination of Death in the Field )
  2. If non-traumatic cardiac arrest is suspected as the case of the traumatic event, treat the patient under Protocol 700-C1: Cardiac Arrest
  3. Apply Spinal Motion Restriction as indicated
  4. Address and areas of significant blood loss with hemorrhage control measures, regardless of any active bleeding or hemorrhage
  • Apply tourniquet(s) proximal to any large wound, laceration, or amputations of the extremities, regardless of any active bleeding or hemorrhage
  1. High quality, uninterrupted CPR
  2. Mechanical CPR devices are prohibited on traumatic arrests
  3. Establish Airway (See Procedure 704: Advanced Airway Management )
  4. Apply AED and follow device instructions ( BLS providers only )

BLS protocol for trauma

A
  1. Treat life threats ( See Procedure 701 Life Threats )
  2. Control external bleeding using
    * Direct pressure
    * Tourniquets
    * Pressure bandages
    * Hemostatic gauze
  3. Spinal precautions as indicated
  4. Splint as appropriate in position of comfort
  5. Apply traction splint as indicated for mid-shaft femur fractures
  6. Cover eviscerations with moist, sterile dressings
  7. Cover open chest wounds with approved chest seal dressings. Evaluate frequently
  8. Prepare for transport / transfer of care
  9. Refer to Triage Tool ( Policy 626 Trauma Triage ) during assessment and treatment
