Amputations and Prosthetics Flashcards
levels of upper limb amputations (9)
*proximal to distal
- interscapular thoracic
- shoulder disarticulation
- transhumeral (short)
- transhumeral (long)
- elbow disarticulation
- transradial (short)
- transradial (long)
- wrist disarticulation
- transmetacarpal
levels and losses
- the higher the level of amputation the greater the functional loss of the limb
- the greater the functional loss the more complex the prosthesis
phocomelia
shortening or absence of limbs as a side effect of thaliodomideoccurred in many children in the 1960s
amputation postsurgical care (4)
- skin2. sensation3. bone4. wound healing
skin issues postsurgical amputation (6)
- skin breakdown2. delayed healing3. edema4. cysts5. ischemia6. scar adhesions
sensation issues postsurgical amputation (3)
- neuroma2. phantom limb3. phantom sensation*patients rely on vision and propriocepetion
bone issues postsurgical amputation
bone spurs may develop
body-powered prosthesis components (5)
*for wrist disarticulation and higher1. prosthetic sock2. socket3. harness and control system4. terminal device5. wrist unit
functional training with prosthesis
most functional activities are performed with the uninvolved hand/arm as the dominant hand
What is the determining factor in deciding which hand to use?
sensory feedback
preprosthetic therapy (3)
- identify or test potential muscle sites for control2. improve muscle site control and strength3. obtain adequate financial sponsorship for prosthesis and training
postprosthetic therapy
training of ADLs and IADLs with use of prosthesis
Coat Method of donning/doffing prosthesis
The prosthesis is on a table/bed and the person pushes the limb between the control cable and the Y-strap from the medial side into the socket. The harness is then brought across the shoulder of the amputated side and dangles the harness down the back. The sound hand reaches around the back and slips into the axilla loop. The person then slips into the harness as if putting on a coat.
Sweater Method for donning/doffing prosthesis
placing the residual and sound limb in at the same time and then raising both arms up, out, and up to don the prosthesis
