What are amphetamines and there classifcation
A group of synthetic drugs based on the amphetamine structure. Part of the phenylethylamine group of compounds.
Amohetamines are Class B, schedule II drug.
Methamphetamine is a class A, schedule II drug.
Methods of use
Ingested orally
Snorted
Injected intravenously
Smoked
Effects of Ecstacy
Alertness, enhanced self confidence, increase motivation, aggression, increased heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and rate of breathing, anxiety, insomnia.
Long term effects - depression, cardiac arrest, amphetamine induced psychosis.
Synthesis of amphetamine
Leukart reaction
Phenyl-2-propanone + ammonium formate —> amphetamine.
Synthesis of methamphetamine
- Pheny-propanone + methylamine —> (in presence of mercuric chloride aluminium metal and ethanol)—> methamphetamine.
- Ephedrine —>(in presence of hydrogen iodine red phosphorus and ammonia and dry ice and acetone) —> methamphetamine.
Analysis
Marquis colour test - Orange-brown in the presence of amphetamines and methamphetamine.
Confirmatory - GC-Ms or HPLC
Classification of PCP (phencyclidine)
Class A, schedule II drug.
Synthesis of PCP
Piperidine + cyclohexanone —> (presence of KCN and Na2SO3)—> PCC —>(presence of C6H5MgBr) —> PCP.
