Amount of Substance Flashcards
What do we call a molecule when there is a metal present?
A compound.
What are the trends in positive and negative ions?
Positive ions don’t change their name. Negative single ions usually end in -ide, polyatomic usually end in -ate.
What is the purpose of mass spectrometry?
Finds the relative atomic mass of an element or the relative formula mass of a compound. It can differentiate between isotopes.
How do you find the Empirical formula?
Find the mass of each element, then find the moles of each element. Divide the moles by the smallest number and turn that into a whole number ratio. From there, you can find the formula.
