Amorphous Forms of Carbon Flashcards
What is Charcoal?
When a solid organic compound is heated in controlled supply of air, it leaves behind a grey residue, commonly called charcoal.
Define Adsorption.
Adsorption is the process due to which a substance accumulates gases, liquids or solids on its outer surface.
State two physical properties of wood charcoal.
It is a grey brittle solid, porous in nature
It is a bad conductor of heat and electricity
How does wood charcoal react with oxygen? support your answer with the following support answer with an equation.
When wood Charcoal is heated in air, or in oxygen, it catches fire at 400° C and burns without a flame to form carbon dioxide and liberates a large amount of heat energy.
(equation)
How does wood charcoal react with Steam? Support your answer with the following support answer with an equation.
When superheated steam is passed through white-hot charcoal, it reduces steam to a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which is commonly called water gas.
(equation)
How does wood charcoal react with Copper Oxide? Support your answer with the following support answer with an equation.
When copper oxide is heated with powdered charcoal, they produce copper and carbon monoxide.
(equation)
State four uses of wood charcoal.
Hint:
- Household fuels
- Reducing Agent
- Deodrants and Disinfectants
- Gunpowder.
State the composition of bones.
60% Calcium phosphate; 40% Organic Matter
State a use of Bone Charcoal.
Decolourising sugarcane juice during manufacture of Sugar.
State three uses of Lamp Black.
- Kajal
- black paint
- printer ink
State 1 use of each of the product formed when coal is subjected to destructive distillation.
- Coke- household fuel
- Coal Tar- Chemicals such as benezene and phenol
- Gas Carbon- electrodes for dry cell
