Amniotic Fluid Flashcards
By day 9 when the ectoderm is fully implanted, the ectoderm is gradually displaced with what?
Extracellular fluid (amniotic fluid)
As embryo grows what happens to the amniotic membrane?
It grows until it covers the entire embryo except the umbilical area.
What happens at 4-8 weeks with the amnion?
Due to amniotic fluid production increase, the amnion swells so that the amnion and chorion now grow in close proximity
When does amniotic fluid level start to decline?
39 weeks
During the first half of pregnancy, amniotic fluid is similar to the composition of maternal plasma. What changes this?
After 20 weeks the fetal kidneys and lungs contribute to amniotic fluid composition
What differentiates the composition of amniotic fluid to maternal or fetal plasma?
It is hypo-osmolar (less fluid intake)
