Amniotic fluid Flashcards
1
Q
What are the components of amniotic fluid?
A
Clotting factors II, VII and X Prostaglandins Thromboxane ILF1 and TNF-a collagen and tissue factor
Fetal squames Vernix lanugo meconium gut mucin trophoblast
2
Q
How is amniotic fluid made?
A
- Formed by maternal plasma pushed through fetal membranes by osmotic and hydrostatic pressures
- After 16 weeks the fetal kidneys have developed and fetal urine contributes
3
Q
Describe the pattern of amniotic fluid volume during pregnancy.
A
Mean AFV increases from 250 mL to 800 mL between 16 to 32 weeks.
Then remains stable until term.
Than declines to 500 mL at 42 weeks.
4
Q
Where does amniotic fluid initially come from?
A
Unsure, probably transudate of maternal and fetal plasma
5
Q
Where does the rest of amniotic fluid come from?
A
Fetal fluid production 300-400 mL/day near term.
- Lung fluid
- Urine primary source, fetus produces 400-1200mL/day.
6
Q
Near term, how much fetal swallowing/resorption of amniotic fluid occurs?
A
200-500mL/day
