How is amniotic fluid made?

A
  • Formed by maternal plasma pushed through fetal membranes by osmotic and hydrostatic pressures
  • After 16 weeks the fetal kidneys have developed and fetal urine contributes

Describe the pattern of amniotic fluid volume during pregnancy.

A

Mean AFV increases from 250 mL to 800 mL between 16 to 32 weeks.
Then remains stable until term.
Than declines to 500 mL at 42 weeks.

A

Fetal fluid production 300-400 mL/day near term.

  • Urine primary source, fetus produces 400-1200mL/day.
