What is a calibre ?
The bore diameter of a rifled barrel
What is a specific calibre?
Individual cartridge design that a firearm is designed to fire.
Written on the round.
What is a nominal calibre?
Approximate diameter of projectile. Category. Includes families of cartridges that share similar bullet diameters but differ in design and appearance.
What is a gauge?
Unit of bore measurement in relation to shot gun shells. The smaller the gauge number the bigger the bore diameter.
What do you do in relation to photography and ammunition?
Photograph using FUSS method. Photograph headstamp, make, calibre, type of bullet, year of manufacture, Country of origin.
What do you photograph on ammunition box ?
Photograph all sides, check flaps for ammunition details and photograph calibre, Bullet weight, lot numbers.
How do you package ammunition?
Can package in crime scene envelope. Vials are good for small cases, rounds and fragments. Place autopsy bullets and fragments into vial with water to soak.
How do you record complete rounds on the FR?
Categories as- Ammunition
How do you record discharged/ fired cases on the FR?
Categories as- Cartridge cases
How do you record bullets/ pellets/ fragments on the FR?
Categories as- Projectile
How do you record wads, buffer and misc ammo components on the FR?
Categories as- other
Can you take fingerprints on ammunition?
Yes. However unlikely to get prints on fired case. Generally it’s only considered for complete rounds.
