- Viral swab and viral throat swab
- supportive
What is Croup
Common childhood illness - caused by upper respiratory tract infect with parainfluenza
How does croup present
- Barking cough
- stridor
- hoarse voice following coryzal illness
How do you investigate croup
- Westly scoring system
0-3 = mild
4-6 = moderate
6> severe
What is the management for croup
- oxygen and antipyretic
What causes Cystic Fibrosis
- Autosomal recessive
- caused by mutation of the CFTR gene on chromosome 7
- Chloride channel does not work properly - water and sodium do not move
How does Cystic fibrosis present
- Meconium Ileus
- pancreatic insufficiency
- respiratory disease - recurrent chest infections with unusual organisms
- infertility
How do you test for Cystic Fibrosis
Sweat Test - 98% sensitive
- genetic testing
- heel prick test
How do you manage Cyctic fibrosis
- Chest physio
- pancreatic enzymes - croon
- high calorie diet
- regular monitoring
- prophylactic antibiotics
What is necrotising enterocolitis
- affects premature babies
- causes necrosis of the bowel
how does necrotising enterocolitis present
- blood
- mucus stool
- Billious vommiting
- abdominal distension
How would you investigate a possible necrotising enterocolitis case?
- AXR stage and treat with NBM NG tube IV fluids TPN
