AMINO ACIDS ( POLYPEPTIDES ) Flashcards

1
Q

What are the primary and secondary protein structures

A

PRIMARY
- primary structure of a protein is a chain of amino acids (polypeptides) and these are bonded together by peptide links

SECONDARY
- it occurs when a primary protein folds into a structure (e.g. a-helix and b pleated sheet)

Q

What are the tertiary and Quaternary protein structures?

A

TERTIARY
- when a single polypeptide chain has multiple secondary structures

QUATERNARY
- the proteins overall structure. it is when multiple tertiary protein structures together form a larger protein

Q

Why are amino acids important?

A

they are the most basic building blocks of protein

they bond together to produce polypeptides
these polypeptides are a proteins primary structure
