AMINO ACIDS ( POLYPEPTIDES ) Flashcards
What are the primary and secondary protein structures
PRIMARY
- primary structure of a protein is a chain of amino acids (polypeptides) and these are bonded together by peptide links
SECONDARY
- it occurs when a primary protein folds into a structure (e.g. a-helix and b pleated sheet)
What are the tertiary and Quaternary protein structures?
TERTIARY
- when a single polypeptide chain has multiple secondary structures
QUATERNARY
- the proteins overall structure. it is when multiple tertiary protein structures together form a larger protein
What are the bonds between amino acids called and what do they form between?
the bonds are called peptide links
they form between the amino and carboxylic groups in the amino acids
Important proteins with these structures (primary to quaternary)
enzymes
haemoglobin
anitbodies
Why are amino acids important?
they are the most basic building blocks of protein
they bond together to produce polypeptides
these polypeptides are a proteins primary structure
What are the two functional groups in amino acids called?
amine group and carboxylic acid group
