Amino Acids Flashcards
Amino acids are chiral with 4 groups:
(left) Amino (NH3+) [except proline]
(right) Carboxylate (COO-)
(down) Hydrogen (H)
(up) Side chain (R)
‘L’ isomer meand the amino group is
Biologically, we use L isomers
on the ‘left’ side
D isomer means the amino group is
on the right side
the “zwitterionic” (dipolar) form of amino acids perists from pH 2 to 9 and means?
H3N is protonated but COO- is not
protonated = H3N+ and COOH
deprotonated = H2N and COO-
The 9 Nonpolar Hydrophobic AMino acids are:
Glycine, Alanine, Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Methionine, Prolien, Phenylalanine and Tryptophan
the 6 polar amino acids are:
Serine, threonine, tyrosine, cysteine, asparagine and glutamine
The 3 positive amino acids are:
lysine, arginine, and histidine
the 2 negative amino acids are:
aspartate and glutamate
Polar amino acids Serine, threonine and tyrosine share what functional group?
hydroxyl group (OH)
- more hydrophillic and reactive
Cysteine has what functional group
thiol, -SH
- much more reactive than OH
asparagine and glutamine share what functional group?
carboxamide group (H2N-C=O)
Negatively charged amino acids have what functional group
carboxylic acid (COO-)
Glycine
Gly, G
Alanine
Ala, A
Valine
Val, V
