AMino acids Flashcards
Amino acids
are the monomers from which proteins are made.
How are dipeptides formed
condensation of two amino acids
How are polypeptides formed
condensation of many amino acids.
Primary structure of proteins
Sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain joined by peptide bonds
Secondary structure of proteins
Hydrogen bonding between amino acids which cause polypeptide chain to fold into a repeating pattern e.g. alpha helix or beta pleated sheet.
Tertiary structure of proteins
Overall 3d structure of a polypeptide which is held together by the interactions between the amino acid side chains. They form ionic, disulfide, hydrogen bonds
Quaternary structure
Made up of 2+ polypeptide chains, held together by more hydrogen , ionic and disulphide bonds.
