Amino acid classification Flashcards
How are the amino acids classified ?
They are classified according to their :
- Chemical structure : the structure of the side chain ( R-group).
- Polarity : polarity of the side chain.
- Nutrition : if the amino acid can be synthesized or not in the body.
- Metabolism : Based on the fate of the amino acid in the body.
What are the simple amino acids ?
Glycine and Alanine
What are the amino acids the branched chain amino acids ?
Valine and Leucine and Isoleucine
What are the amino acids containing OH group ?
Serine and Threonine
What are the amino acids containing Sulphur atom ?
Cysteine and Methionine
What are the amino acids containing an acidic group ?
Aspartic acid and Glutamic acid
What are the amino acid containing amide group ?
Asparagine and Glutamine
What are the amino acids containing basic group ?
Lysine and Arginine
What is the amino acid that contains Guanido group ?
Arginine
What are the aromatic amino acids ?
Phenylalanine and Tyrosine ( Tyrosine has hydroxyl radical )
Tryptophan ( indole ring )
What are the heterocyclic amino acids ?
Histidine ( Basic amino acid and has imidazole ring )
What are the imino amino acid ?
Proline
What are the polar charged charged amino acid ?
Negatively charged : aspartic and glutamic (acidic amino acides which are mono amino di-carboxylic acids )
Positively charged : lysine and arginine and histidine (basic amino acides which are di-amino mono carboxylic )
What are the polar uncharged amino acid ?
Hydroxl chain : serine , threonine and tyrosine.
Sulfhydral side chain ; Cysteine
Amide side chain : asparagine and glutamine
What are the non polar amino acids ?
- Simple and branched AA
- Phenyl alanine and tryptophan
- Methionine
- Proline
