Amines Flashcards
how many H’s does a primary , secondary and tertiary amine have ?
primary = 2
secondary = 1
tertiary = no H’s
what is an aromatic amine ?
N is attached to benzene ring
what is an aliphatic amine ?
N attached to straight/branched C chain = non-aromatic
what can all amines act as + why ?
can act as bases , can accept H+ by forming a dative covalent bond due to the lone pair
what is name of product when amine reacts with a H+ ion
alkylammonium ion
how is an ALIPHATIC amine prepared + why is excess and ethanol used ?
- react haloalkane with EXCESS ammonia in ethanol
- excess to prevent further substitution + ethanol prevents water reacting with haloalkane to form alcohol
why is ethanol used in preparation of aliphatic amines ?
ethanol prevents water reacting with haloalkanes forming an alcohol
why is excess ammonia used when preparing aliphatic amines ?
to prevent further substitution to secondary + tertiary amines
how is an aromatic amine prepared + how is it represented in equations ?
- reduce nitrobenzene using tin (Sn) + conc HCl under reflux
- represent a 6 (H) + forms 2 H2O
how is a secondary amine prepared ?
no use of excess NH2 this time , react primary amine with haloalkane then , salt with NaOH
how is polyester prepared ?
dicarboxyllic acid + diol
how is polyamide prepared ?
diamine + dicarboxyllic acid as 2 sepearate monomers
- or one bifunctional compound
what is an amide ?
- NHC=O
how do you name an amine that has subsitution on the N ?
N-methyethylpropylamine etc
