Amides, Esters, and Anhydrides Flashcards

1
Q

What is a Lactam?

A

cyclic amides that are important in antibiotic biochemistry.

4-membered ring is a beta lactam, 5 is a gamma lactam, and 6 is a delta lactam (refers to the # of carbons in the ring)

Q

How does the fischer esterification work?

A

It is an acid-catalyzed reaction between a carboxylic acid and a primary alcohol, which results in an ester.
the carbonyl oxygen is protonated, then the alcohol attacks, forming a geminal diol. the OH of the carboylic acid is then protonated and leaves as water, and the oxygen of the carboxylic acid is deprotonated.
