Amides, Esters, and Anhydrides Flashcards
What is a Lactam?
cyclic amides that are important in antibiotic biochemistry.
4-membered ring is a beta lactam, 5 is a gamma lactam, and 6 is a delta lactam (refers to the # of carbons in the ring)
How does the fischer esterification work?
It is an acid-catalyzed reaction between a carboxylic acid and a primary alcohol, which results in an ester.
the carbonyl oxygen is protonated, then the alcohol attacks, forming a geminal diol. the OH of the carboylic acid is then protonated and leaves as water, and the oxygen of the carboxylic acid is deprotonated.
What are lactones?
similar to lactams, but cyclic esters
How are anhydrides with two different parent acids named?
alphabetically including the names of both acids, followed by the suffix -anhydride
