amides Flashcards
what is an amide?
a derivative of a carboxylic acid with functional group CONH2
describe a primary amide
functional group attached to 1 carbon
describe a secondary amide
functional group attached to a carbon and a hydrogen is replaced with an alkyl R group
what is a structural isomer?
isomers with the same structural formula but different arrangement of atoms in space
- mirror images of each other
how are enantiomers formed?
4 different groups are attached to a chiral carbon & arranged in 2 different ways, forming 2 molecules
what does superimposable enantiomers mean?
they will never overlap
what is meant by plane polarised light?
- standard light oscillates in all directions
- light is passed through a polaroid filter
- plane polarised light is formed which oscillates in only 1 direction
- 1 enantiomer rotates light clockwise and the other rotates in anticlockwise (they are known as D and L)
state the bond angle & shape for the chiral carbon
- tetrahedral
- 109.5
