Q

how are enantiomers formed?

A

4 different groups are attached to a chiral carbon & arranged in 2 different ways, forming 2 molecules

Q

what is meant by plane polarised light?

A
  • standard light oscillates in all directions
  • light is passed through a polaroid filter
  • plane polarised light is formed which oscillates in only 1 direction
  • 1 enantiomer rotates light clockwise and the other rotates in anticlockwise (they are known as D and L)
