Why was it introduced
King of France had been defeated by Charles V in 1525
Henry wanted to take advantage of this by invading France and recovering lands lost by crown in 15th century
Amicable grant was to help pay for invasion
Tax third of property on priests and sixth on the property of commoners
Why was it controversial
Wasn’t approved by parliament and was being collected by Royal Decree
People had only 10 weeks to pay
Was resented and couldn’t afford it
Possible risk of rebellion against the king

Many reused to pay claiming they couldn’t afford it
Rebellion broke out in Suffolk with 10000 men gathering in town expressing loyalty to crown but demanding he was aware of their anger

Long term consequences
Wolsey was humiliated and reputation badly damaged
Unable to raise any further taxes whilst remaining as kings first minister
Henry began doubting Wolsey
Wolsey enemy position strengthened
