Why could the original 13 colonies not travel west?
Appalachian Mountains, Mississippi River, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, Plateau Region, Sierra Nevada Mountains
Indian Removal Act?
1832 - Establishes the Permanent Indian Frontier, Indian tribes banned from the East but the Plains is theirs.
When did the Sioux get horses and what did this enable them to do?
1860 - Allowed them to travel easily across the plains to hunt the plentiful Buffalo
When did the Europeans bring new diseases and what damage did this cause?
1700s - Small pox and various other diseases were brought to America. The Indians were not immune to these other diseases.

1988 Miles long, 497 Miles wide

Covers 2530 Miles, with a peak width of 11 Miles
Products of the Buffalo
Hide - Tipi, clothes / Bones - hoes, knives / Skull - decorated and used in religious rituals / Horns - Head dresses, spoons, cups / Hooves - Glue, tools / Fur - Blankets, saddle covers, gloves / Hair - Pillow stuffing / Tongue - Hairbrush and food / Flesh - Eaten raw, dried. boiled or roasted
Structure of Plains Indians?
Nation -> Tribes -> Bands -> Chief, Council, Warrior Society
Women’s role on the Plains?
Look after the Tipi, cook, clean, raise children and make products from the Buffalo
Men’s role on the Plains?
Hunt, Fight enemies, Protect the Family
Elderly role on the Plains?
Help to raise the children and to educate them
Exposure?
When an elderly band member agrees to be left behind to die to ensure the survival of the rest of the band.
Polygamy?
There were more women on the plains than men. Women needed a man to provide the buffalo, so polygamy made sense
Problems of the Plains?
Winds, Wood shortages, Extreme temperatures, Nomadic Lifestyle
