1871- 60000 cattle were driven north
Trials were 1200-1500 miles long
Joesph McCoy
Saw money could be made by moving beef cattle, he set up abeline as a fully equipped cow town in 1867
Cow towns
A violent reputation- cowboys often went wild there after hardship of the trail
Cattle men and ranchers CONFLICT
Longhorn cattle carried a tick which carried Texas fever, the tough longhorns were immune but homesteaders cattle were not. This meant homesteaders lost cattle whennheard was driven across their land. Lack of wood and fences meant that cattle stampeded on crops
Ending of bonanza
John liff and Charles goodnight crossbreeded longhorns with herefords- meatier but less resistance to harsh conditions.
Herds became too big for for grazing areas which meant underfed cattle entered the harsh winters in 1886-7.
Homesteaders fences became death traps as cattle piled up against them.
