Declaration of Independence

A

June 1776, the delegates to the second continental congress decided to declare independence from Great Britain and appointed a committee to prepare a statement for the reasons of the separation. Thomas Jefferson drafted the statement. It concludes with a list of complaints against the king and asserts the colonies’ right to declare independence, sign July 1, 1976

Taxation without representation

A

a phrase that was used during the Boston tea party because it was a conflict over taxation and with representation, the British could tax the colonies as much as they wanted so they wanted taxation without representation

Navigation act

A

these laws required the British colonies to sell certain goods only to England. The few products the colonies could sell to other countries were charged a British tax. This contributed to the call for revolution. This will lead to all of the main events and acts to come.

Articles of Confederation

A

Weaknesses: Did not give enough power to the federal government, did not grant congress the power to impose taxes, unable to raise a formidable army, US currency low, falling farm prices, fear a king, weak central government

Strength: declare war and make peace, coin and borrow money, detail with foreign countries and sign treaties, and operate post offices
