American Revolutionary war Flashcards
Declaration of Independence
June 1776, the delegates to the second continental congress decided to declare independence from Great Britain and appointed a committee to prepare a statement for the reasons of the separation. Thomas Jefferson drafted the statement. It concludes with a list of complaints against the king and asserts the colonies’ right to declare independence, sign July 1, 1976
Taxation without representation
a phrase that was used during the Boston tea party because it was a conflict over taxation and with representation, the British could tax the colonies as much as they wanted so they wanted taxation without representation
Navigation act
these laws required the British colonies to sell certain goods only to England. The few products the colonies could sell to other countries were charged a British tax. This contributed to the call for revolution. This will lead to all of the main events and acts to come.
Articles of Confederation
Weaknesses: Did not give enough power to the federal government, did not grant congress the power to impose taxes, unable to raise a formidable army, US currency low, falling farm prices, fear a king, weak central government
Strength: declare war and make peace, coin and borrow money, detail with foreign countries and sign treaties, and operate post offices
Battle of yorktown
Began September 28, 1781. Continental troops and British troops begin a battle that was known for the most important battle in the revolutionary war.
