Quartering act
First occurred on March 24, 1765
Forced colonists to provide housing and food for British troops.
The soldiers would not have to pay for anything they used or took
Townshend act
Passed in 1767
In posing new taxes on colonists
Taxes on lead, paper, paint, glass,wool, and tea imported by the colonists
Tea act
Passed in May 10 1773.
Allowed the British East India Company to sell tea and molasses without the usual tax.
It granted a monopoly on the trade of the east India company and on the colonies
The colonists had to buy tea from that company
This act led to widespread boycotts of tea throughout the colonies.
Stamp act
In November, 1765 Imposed taxes on all legal documents such as: Marriage licenses newspapers property deeds playing cards contracts
Pay the tax to receive a stamp British seal on those important documents
Because of this act, a group was formed: the sons of liberty.
Sugar act
Passed on April 5, 1764 without colonist consent
The British raised the taxes on sugar
Colonists saw saw it as taxation without representation
Some examples of taxes on food and plants are: Molasses Wine Sugar Coffee Indigo
The money was going to England and not the colonies.
Writs of assistance
Allowed custom officials to search anywhere for smuggled goods
Navigation act
The colonies could only ship raw materials on English ships and buy goods that came off English ships.
Why did the British tax the colonies?
Because they lost money in the French and indian war
Boston massacre
Occurred in 1770
The townspeople pelted snow balls at the soldiers. They also called them names.
Shots were fired
11 colonists were hit and 5 died.
Crispus Attucks- a black man was the first martyr.
Boston tea party
Occurred in 1773
The crowd dressed as Indians
Boarded 3 ships
Threw 9000 pounds of tea overboard as a protest on the tax on tea
Intolerable/Coercive act
Was passed by the parliament in 1774 as a reply to the Boston Tea Party
These acts were passed to have more control over the colonies
They also closed the Boston port.
