The purpose of government is to protect your rights: life, liberty, pursuit of happiness/ property. Citizens can change or get rid of a government that does not protect their rights and make a new one that will.

Advantages:
The colonists had good leaders (George Washington)

Defending their own land, principles, and beliefs.
Disadvantages:
The British had a better military
The British could raise money better than the Continental Congress.
