musical characterisitcs
no harmony; mix of non-lexical sounds, 3 to 6 note scales, lots of repitition; lots of drum and rattles
regional diff; plains, southwest, northwest pacific
pow-wow, men around large drum w/ pulsing high to low to high voices; loud beats signal end of section
high to low tense voices
darker voices, log drums, rattles shaped like animals, banned for many years (log house celebration)
pan-indian; trail of tears, ghost dance, pow-wow
forced Indian movement from lands 1000s died; late 19th century (return of dead, bye bye white man); slow circle no instruments, suppressed (led ot Wounded Knee); intertribal gatherings, still happen today
