Second Amendment
Freedom to set up necessary state militia
Freedom to bear arms
First Amendment
- Freedom of press, speech, and religion
- Freedom of peaceful assembly and to petition the government
Third Amendment
Forbids the quartering of soldiers in private homes
If it is done, the owner must consent to it, and get compensated
Fourth Amendment
Forbids unreasonable search and seizure of personal property
Forbids the use of general warrants for search or arrest
Fifth Amendment
A person accused of a crime may not be tried twice for the same offense(double jeopardy)
A person may not be compelled to be a witness against himself(self-incriminating evidence)
One cannot be deprived of life, liberty, and property without a trial
Sixth Amendment
An accused person in a criminal case has the right to:
- a speedy trial and impartial jury
- knowledge of the charges against him/her
- defense counsel
Seventh Amendment
Jury trial in civil cases
Eighth Amendment
Prohibits excessive fines, bails, cruel punishments
Ninth Amendment
Rights of the people are not restricted to the first eight amendments
Tenth Amendment
Reserves to the states or to the people all power not prohibited to the states or given to the federal government
Eleventh Amendment
A state cannot be sued by a citizen of another state, or by a citizen of a foreign country
Twelfth Amendment
Electors shall cast separate ballots for president and Vice President
Thirteenth Ammendment
No slavery shall exist in the United States
Fourteenth Amendment
All persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens
No state shall deprive a person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law
Fifteenth Amendment
Citizens cannot be denied the right to vote based on race
Sixteenth Amendment
Congress shall have the power to tax income
Seventeenth Amendment
Senators shall be elected directly by the people
Eighteenth Amendment
Manufacture, sale or transportations of intoxicating beverages was prohibited
Nineteenth Amendment
Citizens can’t be denied the right to vote based on sex
Twentieth Amendment
Congress shall meet on January 3rd and the new president shall take office on January 20th
Twenty-first Amendment
18th Amendment is repealed
Twenty-second Amendment
President can serve no more than 2 terms
Twenty third Amendment
Residents of Washington DC have the right to vote for president
Twenty fourth Amendment
The right to vote in general elections for federal officials shall not be divided by failure to pay a poll tax
Twenty fifth Amendment
The vice president shall become president if the president dies or resigns
In case of a vacancy in the office of Vice President the president shall elect a VP with the approval of Congress
In case of a presidential disability the VP will be acting president until the president is able to resume his duty
Twenty sixth Amendment
Citizens must be 18 or older to vote
Twenty seventh Amendment
Salary raises for the senators and representatives shall not take effect until after the next election of representatives
