Amendment 11
States cannot be sued in federal court by one of its citizens, a citizen of another state, or by a foreign country (but CAN be sued in state court.)
Amendment 12
Use of electoral college to use separate ballots in voting for president and vice-president.
Amendment 13
Outlaws the practice of slavery in the United States (except in prison)
Amendment 14
- Defined citizenship
- No state can make laws that deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
- No person can be denied any person equal protection of the laws.
Amendment 15
No person shall be denied the right to vote because of race.
Amendment 16
Congress can collect federal income tax.
Amendment 17
2 senators from each state are directly elected by the people.
Amendment 18
Illegal to sell, manufacture, or transport alcoholic beverages.
Amendment 19
Women’s suffrage. The right to vote cannot be denied because of gender.
Amendment 20
Shortened the time between election and when presidents and members of Congress take office. Avoid “lame duck” periods in the transition from one administration to another.
Amendment 21
Repeals (removes) the 18th amendment. Makes drinking legal again.
Amendment 22
Limits president to two full terms (4 years TOTAL.)
Amendment 23
Allows the citizens of the Washington D.C. (a district) to vote for the president and vice president. gave 3 presidential electors to D.C.
Amendment 24
Prohibits the use of poll taxes in federal elections.
Amendment 25
Addresses the issue of Presidential succession and Disability.
-If the president dies, impeached, or resigns- vice president becomes president
-If the vice president dies or resigns, the president can appoint a replacement (subject to Congressional consent)
-President passes authority to the Vice president- Voluntary action
-President loses power involuntarily
