2nd Amendment
• right to bear arms and organize a well regulated militia
- protects an INDIVIDUALS right to bear arms (under SCOTUS ruling in DC v. Heller/McDonald v. Chicago)
3rd Amendment
• bans the quartering of soldiers within citizens’ homes
4th Amendment
• protects against unreasonable search and seizure
- probable cause must be present and a warrant must be granted in order for search to be “reasonable”
5th Amendment
- protects against double jeopardy
- right to remain silent
- federal due process clause
6th Amendment
- right to a fair trial
* right to legal counsel
7th Amendment
• ensures that civil cases can be heard and decided upon by a jury
8th Amendment
• protects against cruel and unusual punishment
- protects against excessive bail and fines
9th Amendment
• just because a right is not explicitly granted in the bill of rights does not mean that right is not enjoyed by the people
- precautionary catch-all
10th Amendment
• reserved powers granted to the states
- powers not granted to the federal government are granted to the states (i.e. education)
11th Amendment
• U.S. Courts cannot hear cases that involve the suit of a state insisted by a person in another state or country
12th Amendment
• created separate electoral voting for the Vice President
- revised earlier practice in which the second winningest candidate would be elected
13th Amendment
• abolished slavery (involuntary servitude)

• details the means for transferring power from President to Vice President in the event that the President dies or is unable to carry out his duties
- also detail the process for electing/appointing a new Vice President in the event of a vacancy

• granted the right to vote to citizens aged 18 or older
27th Amendment
• prevents members of Congress from giving themselves pay raises during the current session
