what are DW nominate scores?
they show the percentage of voters for certain categories such as age
what is party realignment?
large number of voters change party ID over time (southern US used to be dems and northern used to be reps)
what are blue dog democrats?
southern moderate democrats which leads to liberal reps and conservative dems
why did party organization lose power?
- loss of spoils, patronage, political jobs

why do third parties struggle?
bc of the lack of structure, organization, and the winner take all system
what is grass-root lobbying?
groups that petition that are small, not well funded, but have support of the public
what is redistricting?
state legislature draws district lines
what is gerrymandering?
bury group of voters w other voters to prevent them from having a voice
what is a referenda?
questions asked by voters requesting something (certain law)
what is cracking?
split up a group of like minded voters in separate districts
what is packing?
burying a large number of like minded voters together in one district
what is an incumbent?
a current office holder who is seeking re-election
what are open seat elections?
elections w/o incumbents
what is a random sample pool?
method of selection that gives everyone who might be selected to participate in a poll an equal chance to be included
what are tracking polls?
poles that try to change people’s opinion. they occur before people vote
