Q

Are apathetic and antipathetic synonyms? Why or why not?

A

Apathetic and antipathetic are not synonyms. The prefix anti- in the word antipathetic conveys the meaning against, whereas the prefix a- in apathetic conveys the meaning without. Pathos in both words mean feelings. However, because of the difference in the prefixes, apathetic mean to lack feelings or interest with the overall term meaning that there are no feelings or interest present in regards to a person or subject. Meanwhile, antipathetic means to have feelings against something with the overall term meaning that there is a strong feeling of opposition or aversion to someone or something.
