Alveoli and Gaseous Exchange Flashcards
What is the structure of the alveoli?
4 things
- Small/tiny air sacs
- Thin walls
- Moist
- Surrounded by capillaries
How do gases move and what is the name for this movement?
Diffusion - Areas of a HIGH concentration to areas of a LOW concentration.
Where are the alveoli?
Attached to the branches of the bronchioles throughout the lungs.
What takes place at the alveoli?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
What do capillaries gain from the alveoli and what do the do with it?
Gain oxygen and transport it around the body.
Where does gas exchange take place?
Between the alveoli and the capillaries and between the capillaries and the muscle tissue.
In gas exchange what moves from the alveoli to capillaries?
Oxygen
In gas exchange what moves from the capillaries to the alveoli?
Carbon dioxide
Capillaries surrounding alveoli (from muscles) have a high pressure and concentration of what?
Carbon dioxide
Capillaries surrounding alveoli (from muscles) have a low pressure and concentration of what?
Oxygen
What is moved out of the blood and into the alveoli to be breathed out?
Carbon dioxide
