- The giving of something without expecting or wanting something in return
- May even be detrimental to the one giving

What are the benefits of altruism?
A
- Natural selection favours genes that promote altruistic behaviour towards individuals that are genetically related to the altruist

What is an example of altruistic behaviour in animals?
A
Bees devout their lives to their queen, protecting and providing her food. limiting themselves to not reproduce.
This allows for an increased survival on the colony instead of just themselves as individuals
