Altimeter Setting Procedures Flashcards
What is Height?
Vertical distance above a specified point on the surface, usually an airfield/landing site or a runway threshold.
Which pressure do you have to set to obtain Height on your altimeter?
QFE
Which pressure do you have to set on your altimeter to see Altitude?
QNH
Which pressure do you have to set on your altimeter to see Flight Level?
SPS - standard pressure setting of 1013 hPa. Some countries like Ukraine call SPS as the QNE.
You are parked at the apron. You set QFE on your altimeter. What do you expect to see on the altimeter?
With the QFE set on the apron we expect to see 0 (zero) feet as QFE is the pressure at the aerodrome level.
You are parked at the apron. You set QNH on your altimeter. What do you expect to see on the altimeter?
With the QNH set on the apron we expect to see aerodrome elevation as QNH is the pressure on MSL (Mean Sea Level). Vertical distance between MSL and an aerodrome is called ELEVATION.
What is aerodrome elevation?
It is a vertical distance between the MSL (Mean Sea Level) and the aerodrome.
How can you check that your altimeter works correct on the ground?
At any aerodrome you will know elevation. For example, elevation of UKBD (Kyiv Pivdennyi) is 620 feet. With the QNH set at the apron you shall read 620 feet on your altimeter.
However! It is no guaranteed that you will read exactly 620. The acceptable reading range is +/- 75 feet between the altimeter reading and elevation.
Therefore, anything between 545 feet and 695 feet is an acceptable reading.
In which units can a pressure be measured?
Hectopascals, milibars, inches of mercury column and millimetres of mercury column.
When you fly from the region of high pressure to a region of low pressure without changing the pressure setting, your true altitude:
Decreases
When you fly from the region of high temperature to a region of low temperature without changing the pressure setting, your true altitude:

At which pressure setting shall you fly below Transition Altitude?
We shall fly with the reference to QNH and use Altitude.
At which pressure setting shall you fly above Transition Altitude?
We shall fly with the reference to SPS 1013 hPa and use FL (Flight Levels).
At which pressure setting shall you fly below Transition Level?
We shall fly with the reference to QNH and use Altitude.
At which pressure setting shall you fly above Transition Level?
We shall fly with the reference to SPS 1013 hPa and use FL (Flight Levels).
