Behaviourist Explanation

A

Argue that mental illnesses are learned through the environment. For example Watson and Rayner classically conditioned Little Albert to have a phobia of white rabbits, maintained through negative reinforcement

A

Systematic Desensitisation- we cannot be relaxed and scared at the same time (Reciprocal inhibition) using a fear hierarchy we counter condition fear by pairing phobia with relaxation.

Q

Becks Study

A

Compared the effectiveness of cognitive and drug therapy. Used self reports for a baseline, tested after 12 weeks of each condition. Both had decreased depressive symptoms, but lower drop out rate and higher self report scores in cognitive group

Q

Psychodynamic Treatments

A

Must identify unconscious conflicts, then discuss, accept and move forward from it. Dream Analysis is where patients recall dreams (Manifest Content) Therapist then uncovers the Latent content, which is what it symbolises. Sometimes objects have multiple meanings and they’ve been condensed.
