when do you need an alternate
a destination alternate is always required UNLESS
- an instrument approach is published and available for the destination
AND - for at least 1 hour before and 1 hour after ETA
- ceiling will be at least 2000’ above airport elevation
- visibility at least 3 sm
what are the weather minimums required at an airport to list it as an alternate
use the alternate minima published in the procedure charts
IF NONE:
precision approach
- 600’ ceiling & 2 sm visibility
non precision approach
- 800’ ceiling & 2 sm visibility
no instrument approach available at alternate
- ceiling & visibility must allow descent from minimum enroute altitude (MEA) approach & landing under VFR

filing an alternate - gps considerations ( 3 types)
- equipped with non-WAAS gps
- WAAS withOUT baro-VNAV
- WAAS WITH baro-VNAV

- equipped with a non-WAAS gps
flight plan can be based on a gps approach at EITHER the destination OR alternate, NOT BOTH
what’s the second type of filing an alternate - gps considerations
- WAAS withOUT baro-VNAV
flight plan may be filed based off LNAV (lateral navigation) or CIRCLING MINIMA at ALTERNATE (regardless of the available approaches at the destination)
what’s the third type of filing an alternate - gps considerations
- WAAS with baro-VNAV
LNAV/VNAV ( lateral & vertical navigation) or RNP 0.3 are allowed as basis for the flight plans ALTERNATE ( requires Special Authorization and RNP availability )
