Alteration Of DNA Sequences Flashcards
When is DNA most likely to mutate and why?
During DNA replication.
DNA is most vulnerable when single stranded.
Incorrect nucleotide may be inserted
What happens during a deletion gene mutation?
DNA nucleotide/base is removed.
Causes a frame shift.
What happens in a substitution gene mutation?
A DNA nucleotide/base is removed and replaced with a different one.
Does not cause a frame shift.
What happens in an addition gene mutation?
A DNA nucleotide/base is added.
Causes a frame shift.
What happens in an inversion gene mutation?
Two DNA nucleotides/bases swap position.
Does not cause a frame shift.
What happens in a duplication gene mutation?
Multiple copies of a DNA nucleotide /base is added instead of one.
What happens in a translocation gene mutation?
The position of a DNA nucleotide or sequence of DNA nucleotides is changed.
